Born in Liège, Pocognoli began his career with Standard Liège, but left at the age of fifteen to join Genk. In April 2004, he made his first-team debut aged just sixteen, and broke into the first-team in 2006 due to the injuries faced in Genk that season.
On 22 June 2007 he signed a five-year deal with Dutch side AZ.[2] On 26 January 2010 the Belgian international left back wing got back to his former team Standard Liége for a transfer fee of undisclosed sum, signing with Les Rouches until June 30, 2014[3][4][5]
Pocognoli was a member of the Belgium under-21 team, and was part of the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. Pocognoli helped them finish 2nd in their group, ahead of Portugal after scoring a crucial equalizer against the Netherlands, to book their place in the semi-final against Serbia, which they lost 2–0. Nevertheless Belgium went through to the Olympic football in Beijing in 2008.
